Finding Our Feet.

We had out first full day here yesterday and it was a big one! My body clock is taking a while to adjust so I have been waking up quite early. The kids have been loving sleeping in their big beds and Scarlett has not yet figured out that she can actually get out herself so when she wakes she lies in there singing “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” for a good 45 mins. They awoke around 7 I think it was and Nick has had no trouble adjusting and woke at 9.

We live on the corner of street No 57 and street No 294. Street 57 has half a dozen great looking restaurants just a few minutes walk from us. Went to one of those for breakfast. Nick and I had a big fry up, the kids had croissants and we all had fresh squeezed juices. The whole bill came to $20. Very happy with the prices so far!

We then hopped into a Tuk Tuk for our first ride. The kids loved it and it is a great way to see the city. We gave the driver $7 and he drove us around the sights for 2 hours. It was a great way to get out bearings. We travelled along the Waterfront (the Mekong runs through the city) where a lot of the restaurants and pubs are. We then went to Wat Phnom, one of the major landmarks in the city. Scarlett nearly wet herself when she saw Sambo the elephant wandering up the road. We then had him take us to the central market and Soyra Shopping Centre because I REALLY need to know where they are! We then swung by the Australian Embassy so Nick could see where it was as the crazy man is intending on driving to work.

After we got home the kids asked to go to bed for a sleep. I know….they are being amazing! So they went down and I went to do a bit more shopping for essentials that I forgot to get on my first big shop. The kids slept for 3 hours then we all hopped into another tuk tuk and went to visit the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda. We had heard there was a fishpond there and thought the kids might like it. Yes there was and yes they did. You can buy fish food and we just wandered around the massive grounds checking it all out. Will have to go back and get a tour guide one day. It was stunning.

Back to the local for dinner. The kids were tired but happy. I think by the time we get home they should be well and truly restaurant trained. A lady stared playing a beautiful local instrument for the dinner and when she had finished a few songs Quiddy yells out “do you know Baa Baa Black Sheep?” It was hilarious! Best bit was, she did not know that one but she did know “Twinkle Twinkle” and the crowd loved it! Home for a bath and bed for the kids and Nick popped out to street 57 to have a massage. 1 hour, 10 bucks…an no, no happy endings, all legit thankyou!

Phew, so that was day one! Big huh? The kids, again, have settled in so well. Scarlett runs around asking to go on a tuk tuk. I think she likes the way it sounds. They are starting to get used to all of the attention. Everone wants to touch them and take their photo and they were their usual shy selves to start with but already have started to come out of their shell and yell big hellos to people. Sometimes I have to take a step back and remember that I am wandering around Cambodia with my family! Off to meet Phil and Carol for breakfast by the river this morning. Apparently Metro do the best eggs benedict this side of the Mekong. Which reminds me…..better ask Carol about finding a gym………
